There are few books I can say are life changing for me but this one is. I have been challenged in every chapter. I think it is so terrific, I have invited two friends to go through the book with me. I believe God has blessed the messages in this book.
I am grateful for Larry Warner's honesty, kindness, insight . . . grateful for the way this book holds space as I wrestle with my own heart, my "safe" image of God, the limitations I put on God's love and the limitations I put on listening to God's voice. I do not lightly recommend books about the Christian life - but recommending this feels like hanging up a light out onto a dark harbor. We need books like this. If you are hungry for realistic and nuanced wisdom that takes the Gospel deeper into your heart, you are going to be SO BLESSED by this book!
This book is wonderful. Read it slowly and prayerfully. The goodness of God jumps out of every page. It has been a great blessing in just a short time to myself and my loved ones. It is hightly recommended.
Great book on Christian discernment. Larry does a great job dispelling some common Christian notions of decision making and how to incorporate the Holy Spirit into your walk with God. Also, each chapter is short and succinct, so there's no excuse not to relate and to read! )
I purchased this book hoping to learn something about making decisions. That goal was certainly met, but much more importantly, it taught me to see decision-making as a reason and a tool to connect with God, to depend more upon the Holy Spirit and less upon my own wisdom, and to grow in my relationship with Jesus.
In fact, this book was a catalyst for a life change I had been seeking for many years – a closer, more intimate walk with Jesus throughout my day. Despite practicing a daily “quiet time†for many years, I struggled to connect with God throughout the busyness and responsibilities of the rest of my day. I tried many techniques to change that, but in the end, God used this book, more than anything else, to help facilitate a closer walk with Jesus throughout my day.
The book is interesting to read and has a solid Biblical basis. It is also grace-filled – freeing and empowering rather than imposing guilt and burdens. The videos that accompany the book (freely available at b-ing.org) were also interesting, funny, and provided additional helpful instruction.
While the book is a quick and easy read, my recommendation is to work through it slowly, taking time to apply what speaks to you.
Larry takes the "mystery" out of Christian discernment. A challenging read that offers practical tools for hearing God's voice. You do not need to have a theology degree or be a Christian Spiritual Director to grasp the concepts in this book. I was so impressed with Larry's other books "Journey with Jesus" and "Imaginative Prayer Exercises for Youth" that I ordered this book as soon it came out. The Holy Spirit has already used Discernment, God's Will & Living Jesus in a very powerful way in my own life. I highly recommend this book without any reservations!
I love this book already! After only reading the first few sections of the book, God has met me significantly. I enjoy and appreciate lingering with God over the simple, yet deep questions and reflections along the way. I know this will be a transformative and effective resource for my spiritual journey! My desire is to discern and embody the will of God for my own life. As a Spiritual Director, I know it will be a helpful resource as I companion others on the journey who seek to know and do God's will for their own lives.
If you're looking for light reading and quick solutions to your circumstances, you will be disappointed. I started in on this book with a need to discern next steps for my career and found myself deeply engaging with Jesus. Not only has Larry provided me with a vocabulary to name my root struggles, but he has encouraged me to walk in the invitation that Christ gives to live life with Him more deeply. Out of this relationship we can then begin the discernment journey. What I found particularly helpful was 1) that I found myself in a time of disorientation 2) start walking in Christ's invitation to be intimate with Him 3) naming the mode in which Christ is speaking to me 4) becoming aware of the Spirit working and leading in my life. I am still in process through my circumstances, but am listening and living Jesus along the way. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about listening to Jesus.
